At Mattie's Mountain Farm, we take pleasure in producing and nurturing high-quality Lavender, Trees and Honeybees!
Mattie's Mountain Farm is nestled on 148 acres located in the Wayne National Forest near the Crown City Wildlife Area in Gallia County, Ohio. The farm contains year-round picturesque views of forestland, streams and waterfalls as well as unique rock outcroppings. The farm is teaming with wildlife.
The historical Ohio River for which the state takes it name is not far from Mattie's Mountain Farm. The name Ohio originated from the Iroquois word ohi-yo', meaning "great river" or "large creek". The Ohio river has been traversed by many notable individuals to include former US President George Washington; explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark; and Samuel Clemens also known as Mark Twain.
The land that comprises Mattie's Mountain Farm is full of history. Several native American Indian tribes used the land for hunting wild game and gathering nuts and berries. While many of the mid to small size game are still present at Mattie's Mountain Farm, all of the larger wildlife such as Buffalo and Elk are no longer present in the Wayne National Forest due to overhunting centuries ago.
During pre-Revolutionary War times, the French and British laid claim to land that is currently Mattie's Mountain Farm. The British defeated the French during the French and Indian War which secured their ownership of the land. In time, the British were defeated during the Revolutionary War and forced to surrender ownership of their land to the United States.
In 1786, the land that encompasses Mattie's Mountain Farm was acquired by the Ohio Company of Associates. The Ohio Company of Associates was also known as the Ohio Company. The company was formed by Rufus Putnam, Benjamin Tupper, Samuel Holden Parsons and Manasseh Cutler in Boston, Massachusetts at The Bunch of Grapes tavern.
Consisting of Revolutionary War veterans, the Confederation Congress allowed these men to pay for part of the land using bounty land warrants issued to them for their military service. These warrants were issued to officers and soldiers as a form of payment or "I Owe You" and were to be redeemed upon defeat of the British.
In 1787, the Confederation Congress passed the Northwest Ordinance which created the Northwest Territory and included land owned by members of the Ohio Company of Associates. In 1788 the Ohio Company of Associates established Marietta, Ohio as the first permanent settlement of the new United States in the newly orgainzed Northwest Territory.
The owners of Mattie's Moutain Farm provide exceptional stewardship of the forest and the wildlife that call it home. Working together, we maintain a required balance of the natural habitat that benefits both the forest and wildlife. We are committed to developing and maintaining high-quality trees, varied wildlife habitats, and recreational opportunities. Key to our approach is the protection of the forest through the preservation and management of hardwood trees.
Some of the wildlife that call Mattie's Mountain Farm home include White Tailed Deer, Racoons, Red Fox, Squirrels, Bats, Opossums, Chipmunks, Skunks, Bobcats, Black Bears, and an assortment of birds to include American Wild Turkey, Blue Jays, Cardinals, Gold Finches, Barn Owls, Hawks, Ducks, Canadian Geese, and others. Mattie's Mountain Farm possesses a wealth of insects and wildflowers which attracts a myriad of pollinators to include the Monarch butterfly who survive exclusively on the profusion of Milkweed located on the farm.

The Ohio Company of Associates is credited with becoming the first non-Native American group to settle in the present-day state of Ohio.
The early pioneers had to fight Native American Indians, aggressive wildlife, insects and disease to secure and protect their landholdings. Land that makes up Mattie's Moutain Farm was once considered the western frontier of the United States - wild, rugged and dangerous.
While much has changed since the colonial period, much of Mattie's Mountain Farm remains the same - rugged forestland that is teaming with wildlife. As a result, Mattie's Mountain Farm is proud of being a Certified Wildlife Habitat through the National Wildlife Federation. In addition, our certification as a Certified Tree Farm is pending through the American Tree Farm System.
Looking forward, we are expanding our operations and are currently in the process of developing lavender fields at Mattie's Mountain Farm. Lavender is a perennial plant that will add to the farm's beauty without compromising conservation of the farm's wildlife habitat or forestlands.
We are located in Plant Hardiness Zone 6b and we intend to grow several varieties of lavendula Augustifolia which is more commonly known as "English" lavender as well as several varieties of Lavendula x intermedia, otherwis known as lavandins. Our plan is to make our lavender available to the public in the form of live plants, fresh cut and dried arrangements, sachets, soap, aromatherapy oil, lotions, dream pillows and for culinary purposes. Speaking of culinary, we believe the honeybees will enjoy the lavender fields as much as we plan too. If all goes well, we hope to have lavender honey available to the public.
Stay tuned as we provide updates on the development of our lavender fields!
Please note that Mattie's Mountain Farm is currently CLOSED for the season.
